What is VPN and How does it work?

To understand how to set a VPN we have to learn what is a VPN. A VPN stand for Virtual Private Network.  Imagine you have a Private network in your workplace (Office, School etc).  In that work place you have all the sensitive data that is being created and shared by you can your colleagues.  These data is being stored into a local server and retrieved by everyone in your workplace by a local network.  It is done that way because it is what is fast and most cost effective.

Now Imagine that you are at a far away place for some reason.  And you would like to access your work data but you are too worried that the data might get stolen if you access it using the traditional internet connection.  So you ask your colleague at your workplace to Create a VPN and send you the IP address and the Username and Password.  You use them to access the local server located in your office without worrying about data theft.

Also know that VPN uses point to point connection.   That means, If your colleague creates a VPN connection at his computer, and you access it at yours, The starting point of the VPN connection is at your Colleague’s computer and the ending point is at your Computer. While the network at your workplace need not be a point to point but rather a mesh connection.
