What is new in AWS vs Azure | Cloud Computing Giants [April 2018]

We have been using Microsoft Azure for writing My Pc Updates from the start.  But is Azure the right cloud for you too? Or should you just use the older AWS?  Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon’s AWS are the top contenders in the field of cloud computing and so let us see who has better Iaas (Infrastructure as a service) than the other.  To learn more about AWS vs Azure read on.

BEST CLOUD SERVICE PROVIDERS OF 2018

Amazon is easy to start using as new users take advantage of the free first-year service offered to every new user.  Because of this Amazon emerged as a clear winner in revenue in aws vs azure.  Amazon’s Cloud revenue Jumps 45% in the fourth quarter of 2017.  That is $5.11 billion in revenue in one quarter and a total of $17.46 billion in all of 2017.  Amazon beats the prediction of $4.97 Billion.  According to the CFO, Brian Olsavsky AWS has a run rate of about $20 Billion.

Microsoft Azure is no poor performer in the revenue segment. It has an estimated 98% revenue growth in the quarter, with computing usage more than doubling.  It is because it made $7.80 Billion from its intelligent cloud business.  The estimated revenue was $7.51 billion giving it a 15% growth rate.  The intelligent cloud business includes Azure, Windows Server, and SQL Server.

We can already see that Microsoft Azure and Amazon are almost at the same level when it comes to revenue, we will see that they can vastly differ in terms of service offered and pricing that is an important consideration in aws vs azure.  Amazon Web Service is operating since March 2006 for about 12 years.  While Microsoft Azure has been in the business since only February 2010 that makes it only 8 years old.  This does not mean that Azure is any less compared to AWS and we will see how.  Please read on.

From a developer perspective, it is the simplicity of deploying an application that makes Cloud Computing very useful.  In fact, deploying a website requires no developer skills at all.  One can simply create a powerful and interactive website with just a single search, few clicks, selecting a  domain name and finalizing it.

Migrating to the Cloud:

Some of the points to be considered before a company is planning on migrating to the cloud are:

  • What is the Quantity of the data?
  • How Complex is the data?
  • How important is the access permission to the data by the employees of the company?
  • Are all the software, being used by the company, already cloud ready?
  • If we plan to change to a different Cloud service provider or if the company decide to go completely offline ( which is not likely) will the company make the change without any problem?

In an Iaas system,

Customer Managed:

  • Data
  • Application
  • Runtime
  • MiddleWare

Cloud Managed:

  • Virtualization
  • Servers
  • Firewall
  • Networking
  • Storage

An IaaS system will decrease the operating cost and complexity with an increase in the productivity.  With this in consideration, a user can be sure to spend on just the right amount of hardware and infrastructure in all the locations of the office.  But the main issue with moving to the cloud is the inability to move to the cloud.  It can happen when the software used by the company is not cloud compatible.  In that case, the company can resort to Hybrid Cloud.

Hybrid Cloud basically means that the company uses offline hardware resources to use the software that runs locally and Cloud hardware resources to run the software that runs on the cloud.

Microsoft being a long-term software vendor did an amazing job to implement Hybrid Cloud.  Using Microsoft’s Azure Stack, Hybrid SQL Server and Azure StorSimple it is very seamless for a company to migrate to the cloud.  This has been a reason why older companies has to choose Azure over AWS.  But AWS has provided a great many services in recent times to enhance their Hybrid Cloud.  Some of the Hybrid Cloud offerings by AWS are:

  • AWS Storage Gateway
  • Amazon RDS
  • Amazon S3
  • AWS Snowball
  • Amazon VPC
  • Amazon Direct Connect
  • AWS IAM
  • AWS Directory Service
  • VMWare Cloud on AWS
  • AWS Op Works
  • AWS Code Deploy
  • Amazon EC2 Run command
  • AWS Green Gas
  • AWS Snowball Edge

Microsoft is known for Enterprise solutions.  Microsoft makes it easy for large Enterprise customers to move to the cloud.  For .NET developers, publishing to the cloud is very easy.  AWS supports Microsoft Technologies and other open source technologies but it is easier to Migrate to Azure for .NET developers than to migrate to AWS.

Open Source:

Since Microsoft has its own technologies to implement in the cloud, it has mostly remained closed source.  But Amazon is better when it comes to Open source.  Linux users will find it easier to work with the familiar environment that Amazon has to offer.  In recent times, Microsoft has embraced Open source too.  It is known that 1 out of 4 VMs in Azure is Linux.  And some of the services offered by Azure are driven by Linux.  AWS has an upper hand in aws vs azure.

Cost:

It is known that AWS is cheaper than Microsoft Azure.  But it is possible to avail Azure services for free if you are a student.  Amazon offers a full first-year free service to all the customers.  Microsoft offers a 30 days trial with $150 per month initial credits.  If you are a student you can get a full 1-year Azure service with $150 per month.  Here even if Azure is more expensive than AWS Azure is the winner in aws vs azure because of its free offering of advanced and more sophisticated services.

Choosing between Azure and AWS can get hard.  But it eventually comes down to what the users actually want.  When it comes to diverse features Azure beats AWS and when it comes to cost AWS offers a more economical solution.  When it comes to migrating the older system to the cloud Azure can prove better while when it comes to starting a new business with small investment AWS will seem the best option.

Choosing what an organization truly want can turn out difficult initially.  It is likely that the organization will jump from cloud to cloud at the first until it finds the right one.  To know more about the Cloud Solutions or a Specific Technology offered by the cloud, you can tell us in the comments below.
